About Us

Personality of Cult is a collective of Tulsa area artists whose works are devoted to their favorite cult classic films.

The first Personality of Cult exhibit opened in February 2008 and was the largest opening reception in the Circle Cinema Gallery's history. Twenty local artists interpreted their favorite cult films, such as Blade Runner, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and many others, into original works of art in a wide array of media and artistic styles that reflect the artists' unique perspective on the films they love.

Our success with the first exhibit garnered demand for a sequel, and sequels is what we brought. With Personality of Cult: Episode Deux, the theme was focused on cult classic sequels and "franchise" films (films that have spawned at least one sequel or prequel). James Bond, Jaws, The Godfather, Lord of the Rings and other films were interpreted in digital illustration, paint, pen and ink, etc. There was also a special treat in store for Star Wars fans, as several artists in the exhibit each offered a take on their favorite characters.

Up next is Mixtape Art Show, which opens December 4 at the Eclipse in Tulsa and features Tulsa artists take on their favorite songs. Personality of Cult 3-D is scheduled to open in 2010.

Please visit this site for updates on future exhibits and events.

We are open for business!

Opening day. For me, it was ten hours of busy-busy, and as we were running late in hanging the show, it was three hours of terror, then we opened the show and it was five hours of sheer bliss. All of th pieces looked absolutely beautiful, and I am extremely grateful for everyone who helped make the show an amazing success.

Photos are forthcoming, but here's our coverage on Channel 6

Tonight! Tonight! Tonight!

Come one, come all! Personality of Cult: Episode Deux is opening TONIGHT at 7:00! The opening gala is free and open to the public, and tickets to the midnight movie, Clerks, will be $6.00. Wine and refreshments will be provided, as well as catering by Eloté. Silent auction begins at 7:00 and ends at 11:00. Awards ceremony at 9:00

Wednesday and Thursday were heavy production mode for the show. Forms, fliers, title cards, gathering pieces, last minute preparations. Thursday, all pieces were due at the Circle Cinema, and everything looks awesome. Our artists have really gone above and beyond the call of duty, and this show will be one for the ages.

This morning is our segment on NewsChannel 8. Once we have a link or embed video of the segment, it'll be posted here. Also, our segment with Up Late with Ben Sumner will be done during the opening, which is perfect because seeing the pieces in any context other than the final product just wouldn't do it justice.

Lots of work to do before curtains up. A full report will be posted on Saturday, after I catch up on some serious sleep.

Three days to go!

Today, I created the artwork for the awards, typeset the title cards, and scheduled the Friday morning Good Day Tulsa segment on NewsChannel 8. We'll be on sometime in the 9:00 hour.

A special word about one of our sponsors, ThomasDigital LLC, who has been doing all of our printing. Warren Thomas, owner, and his crew have been a trusted vendor of mine for years, and his expertise has been indispensable throughout all of Personality of Cult's endeavors. ThomasDigital has printed posters for both of our shows, and has helped output digital and photography pieces for both shows as well, including my own Blade Runner and Jaws pieces, and Andy Delesderier's Night of the Living Dead piece for PoC1.

Four days to go!

My interview about the art show with OklaTravelNet is online now. I'm still waiting on a direct link or embed video, but you can watch the video here. Choose January 26th's show, and I'm at the top of the show, and a couple minutes in.

I regret that I did not have enough time to discuss our biggest piece on the show, in more ways than one. Local artist Eric Gonzales has created a masterpiece with his Lord of the Rings inspired art work. The detail is astounding, particularly when you take into account that it is all done with pen and ink (with some Prismacolor) and the piece is 6 feet wide and 4 feet tall! Watch out for this guy's work. He's gonna be huge!

After the interview, I went down the street to Eloté to grab some lunch. They are one of our sponsors for Episode Deux, and will be catering the opening. All ingredients are organic, fresh and locally grown (when available), and the way Chef Libby Auld brings it all together, it is absolute heaven. If you haven't been there yet, then what the hell are you waiting for?!? They are open for lunch Monday through Friday, and will be open for dinner starting February 26th.

In regards to the ice storm going on in the Tulsa area, it'll be gone and far away from here by the time the show opens on Friday. However, it nearly cost us some of our pieces. I was on my way back to the office after the interview, and on my way to the front door, i slipped on the ice carrying an armload of the pieces I brought to the interview. My foot slipped off to the side, and my knee came down hard on the pavement. My body quickly pivoted as it fell, instinctively moving to fall on my back instead of landing on the art in my hands. My back hit the ground in a solid thud, followed by the back of my head. I've been on Aleve ever since, but the art work is safe. I guess we all suffer for our art, right?

Five days to go!

Today, the Tulsa Creative Network held its monthly business meeting and everyone is on board to help out in setting up the show this week.

The Tulsa Creative Network is a newly formed organization devoted to connecting and supporting creatives of all disciplines in the Tulsa area. Without their help, Personality of Cult: Episode Deux simply would not have been possible. I highly recommend you visit their web site and join the network.

Six days to go!

Five main pieces and four of the Star Wars 5X5's have been turned in, and everything else is starting to take shape. So far, new art works inspired by Jaws, Phantasm, Halloween, Psycho and Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, along with portraits of JarJar Binks, the Jawas, Stormtroopers and Princess Leia are a lock and ready to hang.

One week to go!

Seven days are left until the opening of Personality of Cult: Episode Deux. Pieces are being finished and gathered as we speak, and the last-minute preparations are underway for what's gearing up to be one hell of a show!

We will be on OklaTravelNet this coming Monday, January 26. A link/embed video to the segment will be posted here as soon as it is available.

We are also scheduling a segment on Good Day Tulsa on NewsChannel 8 for the morning of January 30th. And look for our listing in next week's Urban Tulsa Weekly.

The opening gala and silent auction will open Friday, January 30 at 7:00 p.m. At 9:00, we will be handing out jury awards to the artists and be making important announcements about the Cult's upcoming events. Silent auction bidding will close just after 11:00 p.m.

And why not round out the night with a movie? Stick around afterwards for the Circle Cinema's Midnight Movie: Clerks, as chosen in a poll this past fall by fans of Personality of Cult.
